Mario's first appearance was not in the original "Super Mario Bros."

Explanation

His first appearance was in the 1981 arcade game "Donkey Kong", where he was originally an unnamed carpenter known as "Jumpman". He did not receive his name until the 1982 sequel "Donkey Kong Jr.", reportedly after Mario Segale, Nintendo of America's landlord at the time. He became a plumber in the 1983 game "Mario Bros.", which also introduced his brother Luigi. The iconic "Super Mario Bros.", which established his modern design and the Mushroom Kingdom setting, was released later in 1985.
