Science · True or False?

The Amazon rainforest produces most of the oxygen we breathe

The answer is False.

Explanation

It is a common myth. Roughly half of Earth's oxygen is produced by phytoplankton drifting in the oceans, and a mature forest consumes almost as much oxygen through respiration and decay as it produces through photosynthesis. The Amazon's real climate role is recycling enormous amounts of water and carbon, not producing our oxygen.
