Mathematics · True or False?

There are infinitely many prime numbers

The answer is True.

Explanation

Euclid proved it around 300 BC. The textbook version of his argument goes: assume you have a complete list of all primes, multiply them all together and add 1. The result leaves remainder 1 when divided by any prime on your list, so either it is itself prime or it has a prime factor missing from your list. More than 2,000 years later, new record primes are still being found: the current champion, 2^136,279,841 - 1, was discovered in 2024 by the GIMPS project and has over 41 million digits, and the first Mersenne prime ever found with the help of graphics cards (GPUs).
