It is based on the face of actor William Shatner. Facing budget constraints, the production bought a Captain Kirk mask from a magic shop for a reported $1.98, then widened the eye holes and spray-painted it white. The mask itself was originally created by Don Post Studios from a life cast of Shatner's face. Fun fact: Shatner reportedly only found out about it years later.
